Welcome to the Donald Dewar Centre
The Donald Dewar Centre is located in the building which was formerly the Kelso Nursery School.
Glasgow City Council Social Work Department acquired it from the Education Department and are
leasing it to Glasgow Old People's Welfare Association, who will manage it as a Day Care Centre for
frail elderly people who live in the local Community.
Referrals for a place at the Day Care Centre will normally come via the Social Work Department.
The Donald Dewar Centre will endeavour to meet the needs of its service users in a holistic way.
Our approach is governed by the concepts of wholeness, interdependence and equilibrium. It is
therefore the aim of the Centre to provide for the social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and financial
need of each individual service user.
The Donald Dewar Day Care Centre service users have the following rights:
THE RIGHT the have their assessed needs met from a holistic standpoint.
THE RIGHT to be treated with respect as a unique and valued individual.
THE RIGHT to do for themselves what they are capable of doing with support and encouragement
where necessary.
THE RIGHT to confidentiality and to be consulted if information about them is going to be shared
with family members or, for example, the G.P., Social Worker etc.
The centre is managed by the Glasgow Old People's Welfare Association. Each member of staff is an
employee of the Association and has a unique contribution to make to the Centre and also to the Service
Users. Staff are all trained or are working towards SVQ in Health and Social Care at a level appropriate
to their role. Moreover staff have also attained a varied range of other non mandatory qualifications to
augment their knowledge.
The philosophy of the centre is very much that of staff facilitating the requests of service users within the
parameters of legislation, policy and procedure. This is achieved through a variety of means: service user
meetings, the keyworker system and the suggestion box.
